I have a great 2000 540iT that was one owner until I purchased her in October. After clocking a few miles, I've decided to commit to the platform and build my ultimate car. It makes sense to start with a 2001 to 2003 car, especially if it's a M Sport.
I'm open to most cars, but it will have to be special if it has a tan interior. I also require a sport package if it's not a M Sport.
I can buy or trade. Please contact me at: properhistorics@gmail.com
There are wagons in texas, and plenty in California.
There are wagons up here, heck i just had to stop looking or I'd buy more.
So go look, and bring a couple home.
Links? I'm familiar with the overpriced silver car outside of Houston (the dealer is also super shady).
I'm willing to purchase from 48 states.
Use duckduckgo.com (instead of google's shady-arses) to search "e39 wagon touring estate" + "craigslist"
(the following is my own opinion)
If you are looking for power down the road, go pre-vanos, for looks m-sport but you can make all of them look/act like an m-sport so you don't necessarily need to pay big $ for one just because "m-sport" You'll probably change everything to M5 parts in the first year anyway thus "ruining" the concourse score at a car show of your "m-sport". If investing, '03 m-sport, low miles and pretty/functional... $10-25k? VS say a' 99 in great shape for $3-10?
Be patient, learn what to look for/avoid. WH up there in the thread, he shops a sickeningly, disproportionately wrong-to-the-humans-in-the-group... Ton of e39's. I'd say he's like the NADA of used e39's for projects/drivers.

Is there such a thing in the US as a 540iT pre-vanos? I thought 1999 was the first year imported and they were vanos cars?

2003 is the only year for a true M-sport

Great post. I have a pretty nice 2000 model car, but I'd like something a bit cleaner with lower mileage. Plus, by the time I start adding up parts, it makes sense just to buy something that has a better baseline value.
One of the forum members here posted his 03 M-Sport for sale in the Classifieds section. It's black with a tan interior, but it does have 200k+ miles.
