Angry How bad did I get boned? Battery replacement

So I had the message when I turned my car off, "Battery Discharged, Start Engine". I called my dealer up and scheduled an appointment the next morning. I have a 2013 335i f30.

Turns out. They want $703 for the replacement... and diagnostic. I'm a very good negotiator, so I got it down to $643... (what a joke). I do not have an OBD2 reader/programmer, and I didn't want my car to die on me. In the future, should I just do it myself by buying an OBD reader and using bimmercode? I didn't think I had time to order an OBD reader.

Extra info... turns out my extended warranty doesn't cover batteries. Don't purchase one of these.

    HOLY SHIT! $643?! wtf.

    I love turbos!
I have a Foxwell NT510 and have used it on my E53, E92 and F10. It was very reasonable at $130, and has an updated model, NT 520. Both can register a new $200 AGM battery.

Cool man. I think I'm gonna go ahead and get the bluetooth obd reader. It's a lot more affordable $30 and uses your iphone as the app and updater. Veepeak obd2 is what I'm purchasing. I cannot shell that much out for a easy diy job IMHO.

Make sure the app registers batteries.

Pardon my ignorance, but why not replace the battery? Do you suspect something wrong with the charging system?
