I spent $90 for a complete new assembly for the spoiler brake lights, it's just two wires, so I'm baffled that it would still be misbehaving. Chances it's just a bad unit or are the wires and connections somehow affecting it? I am missing the plastic pigtail that the connectors should be in, which I have posted for a part number or actual piece in another post. Could that really be it?
I will move the thread from Lighting forum to the E36 M3 forum, where the E36 experts can help you
here is the other post he is refering to reg. the pigtail https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...ight-on-E36-M3

Shogun tricks and tips for the E32 series are HERE!
You can disassemble the assembly - just buy some of the correct lights (or even just swap a good and bad light) and see if the problem follows. If it's just a new light needed, that's way easier than shipping it back and getting the whole thing replaced. If it's the wiring, you can troubleshoot or just send it back at that point.
