In the middle of a drain, filter and fill on the transmission and when I go to refill it it seems full. I must have the wrong fill hole. The one I am filling is is a star nut on the driver side of the transmission right on top of the first (left most) pan bolt. About 4 inches up. A few seconds after pumping it just starts to pour out. Any help appreciated.

May have found it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z6cf6JmezE&t=313s
right above the drain bolt. That bolt will not break loose of course and is partially rounded. 17mm?

The video shows it right. When it comes to the 5-speed GM auto box, X3 and E46 xi models have a hex nut on the passenger side but E46 RWD have a torx-type nut in the same spot on the driver side.
Thanks Vinyldude. I got it done. Not to hard. I'm still having an issue after the filter and partial fluid change. Tranny is slow to shift into 4th gear. Won't shift until over 4k rpm most of the time. Sometimes its fine. If I take my foot of the gas the revs just stay high. Car does chug every once in a while. Light finally came on so I'm gonna check codes tonight.
Just checking, but did you fill it to the right level? You need to have the engine running, AC on, and transmission temperature as low as possible when you do the final fill.
The transmission should take about 4.5 to 5 quarts when you drain and fill without torque converter.
ah sorry guys I didn't see the replies till now. Tranny still acting up but the filter and fluid change was not to hard once I found some socket extractors. Came right out. Still seems to me it just doesn't know when to shift. Need to go read the codes since they finally came back. I'll turn
