AC button must be pressed for cold air?

I have a 2014 535i. This was tested on a recent hot day (80 degrees yesterday) and have experienced in the past. If I set the car to auto at say 60 degrees (yes, middle wheel thing on the vents is on blue), it just blows hot air but if I press AC or Max AC it’s frigid cold. At one of my stops on the same trip, I tried AUto again with AC off and this time it was blowing cold air. On every car auto usually means I don’t fiddle with anything, just press auto and let the car figure out how to maintain my temperature, either heat or AC. Thoughts?

The AC button must be pressed for cold air. Without it, the compressor will not engage.
