Hi all,
I'm really quite confused. I was going to adjust the steering box on my 1988 730i so it feels tighter and there is less play, but it seems the entire box is missing! I have looked at the exact cars online, and my box is just not there. What could this mean? I will attach a link with a picture.

In the picture, the steering box is supposed to be right in the center like on all other cars, but i don't have anything.
Any ideas will be appreciated.
It is because your car is right hand drive. Look down on the right side of the engine bay and you will surely see it.
By the way, the small arm that connects to the center link (in the middle of your photo) is called the idler arm. On our US cars it would be the pitman arm, which connects the steering box to the center link. Your pitman arm is on the right side.
I was going to comment the same, but I see his brake booster is also in the pic. So it has to be a LHD.

I think the brake booster is also on the left side, on right-hand drive cars.
I found this pic of a partially disassembled E34 M5 (RHD) engine bay and added labels. Not sure if it's all correct so we'd need the RHD experts to give feedback
Its a right hand drive. U.K. car but has been imported to Australia in the mid 90s. In order to access the steering box, what would i have to remove? I can't even see the steering box on the other side.
Brake booster on the RHD E34 is certainly as Cactuar indicates. So it is probably the same on the E32. The linkage from the brake pedal runs inside the car. The steering box may be hidden by the air box on your car.
The linkage for the brake pedal on a RHD seems to me more complicated than on LHD http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E3...eflection_rod/
In the pic from Cactuar the center link is painted in red, that is a typical sign of a RHD center link.
There are 2 connections/ball joints on a center link, 1 is basically solid/fixed, the other one is much more flexible, the RHD versions is just the opposite side. The shape of the metal at the bottom is different. One ball joint is differently preloaded. So the shape of the drag link is the same LHD and RHD, it will fit, but the preload is on the opposite side.
