E36 Exhaust Bracket or Clamp Rusted through/broken

    Hey all,

I picked up an E36 M3 a while back for a screaming deal as a first car for my almost licensed 15 year old. The car has a whole bunch of random issues that I'm working on fixing, and this one's a real nuisance. Picture below, there's a metal bracket/clamp that appears to hold the exhaust together about 2/3's of the way back on the bottom of the vehicle. It's rusted and snapped clean through on one side, but the exhaust pipes and everything are still secure. The darn thing rattles and makes all kinds of noise, and it probably simply needs to be fixed. If I take this photo into a basic auto parts store will they be able to give me something to replace it with? Is there anything specific I should know or ask for when looking for a replacement part?

    Thanks!

Go to www.realoem.com and enter the last 7 characters of the car’s vehicle identification number. Hit enter and bookmark the page. Scroll down to the exhaust system icon. Click on it.

You need a split flange, something like this:https://www.amazon.com/Walker-31884-.../dp/B0015KUC5W

If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue

Very common on the E-36's here in Germany as the salt eats those flanges up. I have welded some in place with success, but I think that after 5 years, it will happen again.

So the big problem is you cannot just replace the flange, you have to replace the whole down pipe.

    Nice looking flange Ross!
