I noticed that hitting the brake causes my front side lights to come on, is that a problem or a feature?

No thats not right. Has anyone done any electrical work on it? Ive never heard if that happening, very odd.

You have shorting wiring. Most common is the rear in the trunk on the left, also in the harness that runs up the side of the trunk lid.
