Electronic Parking brake failed, car rolled into fence.

This is a hard topic to search for, since 99% of the results are for i-drive warning messages/codes, or the damn thing not turning off.

This is a f10 535 6 speed. Havent had an issue with the parking brake yet. She normally parks it in gear as well, but didnt this time, so maybe it has failed in the past and she just didnt notice.

Wife stopped at gas station, turned on electronic parking brake. Took 1-2 minutes to get kid out of car seat, the car did not roll at that point. She went inside, came out 5ish minutes later. Her car was gone, it rolled (on relatively flat) across the parking lot and hit a curb and a fence, luckily avoiding gas pumps and the street.

Anyone else have this issue? I would imagine this is a large safety concern for BMW, maybe there was a recall that we missed?

Nope, no recalls. And as far as I can recall, in my 13+ years of dealership work as a tech, I have never heard of one single time that happened. My guess is that it may not have been set. You described the surface is flat, so is it possible she thought she set it, but didn't? And the car didn't roll right away since the surface was relatively flat?

I was thinking the same thing, i would imagine there being a couple failsafes for that system. But i also imagine she would notice it creeping even the smallest anount while taking the kid out. She just mentioned that while she was waiting on someone inside she was looking at her car, and thought to herself that she needed to clean the rims. So stationary for 4 ish minutes.

Nah, not really any fail-safes on a manual trans car. I don't think anyway. There may have been a dash warning, but who knows. You weren't there and I wasn't either. But once the brake is set, it's not going to just fail. The motor has to be reversed to uncrew the caliper piston.

Maybe she pushed the parking brake switch down instead of pulling it up. I did that a few times before getting used to it. There’s no audible when the parking brake is engaged.

I thought the "failsafe" for a manual tranny was to leave the transmission in gear (not neutral) when parking the car...regardless if you set the parking brake or not.

I've had three vehicles that had a manual tranny (1982 VW Scirocco, 1985 BMW 325e, & 1993 Ford Ranger 4x4) and I can't ever recall only depending on the parking brake when parked. To refer back to the "failsafe" question...the failsafe is to leave the tranny in gear AND use the parking brake.

Right. I never park a manual in neutral.
