Knocking at idle

I have a 1989 535i e34 with the m30 engine it runs great with 220,000 miles but the idle is very very rough I got a zip tie on the throttle cable making it idle 200 rpms higher then it should which helps a lot but it is still KNOCKING pretty loud at idle but goes away as soon as it gets over 1500 rpms please help

I would be looking at replacement engines, if I were you. I had the exact same situation, starting knocking right after a valve adjustment, I wrote it off as potentially something else other than impending doom. Engine seized up on a freeway onramp, and later inspection revealed an oilpan full of fine metal fragments. Bearings gave up the ghost. 450 bucks later, and a few headaches, she's running better than new. Maybe someone will chime in saying it's piston slap or something else that might be liveable, but I would be looking at your options. A deep knocking can only really be a few things.
