Transmission replacement

Looking to put 2nd hand transmission into my 2006 BMW 320i E90.
My question is am I restricted to replacement having to be the same year. Zf6hp19 transmission or can I use a 2010 zf6hp19.

Go to www.realoem.com and enter the last 7 characters of the car’s vehicle identification number. Hit enter and bookmark the page. Scroll down to the transmission icon and get the part number for the transmission. Click on the part # to see what other models and years share the transmission. Be advised that even if the transmission itself will fit the transmission computer (EGS) will likely need to be updated or reprogrammed.
