Hello everyone,
I have a 1999 328i that i picked up for a great price with low mileage. Only isssue is the e brake cables need to be replaced. I have the cable unhooked from the trailing arm, it came out nicely from underneath where it goes up to the handle. But it will not budge from where it runs through a housing to where it would meet up with the pads. ive been soaking it with Pb, working it with vice grips and channel locks. Maybe only came out an 1\8th of an inch. im stumped. Am i missing something thats holding it in place or is it just rusted in their?? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It needs that ebrake to work in order to pass a safety inspection.
thanks

The parking brakes on an E46 are actually drum brakes. The rear rotors have a small drum against which the parking brake shoes push against. You’ll have to remove the rear rotors to get access to the cable ends. The hard part is getting the rear rotors off. You’ll need to back off the parking brake shoe adjuster in each brake assembly to get the drum off. Also, buy 2 new rotor screws (item#3 in the link) and a bit of anti-seize compound. Why? You’ll likely destroy the screws when you try to get them off. Put a dab of anti-seize compound on the new screws before you put them in the rotor. Also, clean the hubs (where the wheels and the hubs meet) to prevent corrosion.

Here’s the link to the brakes section. The parking brakes are towards the bottom and are in 2 subsections: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part...MW-330Ci&mg=34
