Gentlemen (and/or Ladies??);
Finally decided to thin the herd and sell a car - of course - it decided to give me a bunch of crap on the way out...
The car: 1997 E39 528i Sedan. Ran the codes in GT1 DIS V44 and - Surprise!!!
The first one is attached here:
ASC Fault.pdf
I'm really hoping this choke valve or whatever it is, isn't inside the ABS/ASC module. If someone could let me know what's up with this thing, it would be much appreciated.
Second thing is more for verification than anything else, although this one is new and/or confusing to me also verbiage wise anyway:
DME Faults.pdf
I'm assuming this is just a matter of replacing the O2 sensors, except the error states it only affects Z3 and 323i US! WTF?
This car has been a very problem free car with consistent maintenance during my stewardship. Decided to sell it and thought it would be best to run the codes because I didn't want to sell a problem to someone else and low and behold, it decided it didn't want to leave.
Anyway, if someone can shed a little light on the first one and verify my thoughts on the second I would be eternally grateful.
Mike

"39, servomotor, choke valve"
The choke valve is in the air intake/inlet.
It's another butterfly valve that can shut off air to the engine (separate from the throttle valve).
I think it's operated by vacuum but the word "servomotor" implies an electric motor so idk.
Check that the bowden cable to the choke is tight and that it can move freely and is not stuck open or closed (move it by hand).
Check all wires/cables and connectors in that area.
About the 2nd pdf:
The for Z3 and 323i it affects cylinders 1-6, for ALL OTHER models it affects cylinders 1-3.

Jaaap is on the right track, except that the servomotor is electric. It will be on the end of the cable that actuates the choke, which lowers power when wheelspin is detected.
I have no idea where the servo is on an I6.
How many miles on the pre-cat O2 sensors?
In CA, you'd have to fix those faults before selling.

Ed;
Even though I'm not in CA anymore (born and raised there), I won't sell a car that's needy (it's a character flaw).
Ed and Jaaap;
I did a search in the ETK trying to find "choke" or "servomotor", came up with nothing, so started digging around the throttle diagrams and found a "secondary throttle" outboard of the main throttle body. Can't find anything called a "choke". Knowing the Teutonic penchant for crappy translations, I'm guessing secondary throttle. If anyone can come up with something different, believe me, I'd be grateful. Below is the ETK diagram and parts list for this part. I did notice that the gas pedal is a bit heavy. Seems to take more ankle pressure to move it. Could be a symptom of the error...

As for the O2 sensors, the car has 236K on it and for all I know, they are original (probably not), but have no way of knowing when, if ever they were changed. I rescued this thing from an abusive owner. Based on my cursory examination of where they are, it looks like it's going to be a SUPER HUGE PAIN IN THE A** to change them.
A side note: Don't think it's related, but may be, I also have a Brake light on the dash. I'm hoping it's part of this "choke" business, but not sure as the "choke" thing came in as an ASC fault.
Again, thank you all for your help and suggestions. I'm going to pull the airbox and check the brake fluid level, as well as dig around the throttle area and check cables, fuses and wires.
Thank you,
Mike
