    Check mileage at junkyard

I have a 1999 silverado z71. Im sure that the years whereby odometer mileage is saved in insturment gauge panel. Biggest problem with them is a bad solder connection that powers up odometer led.
Now while at a junkyard and you want to check mileage on vehicle first before pulling engine. Remove insturment panel from dash. Then cut wiring harness connected to back of panel. Then with a cordless battery and two connecting wires with alligator clips, connect negative side of battery to black/white stripe wire. Connect positive from battery to pink and red wires twisted together. This will power up the insturment panel/gauges.
Also will power up odometer for mileage reading. If odometer doesn't light up and show you the mileage, chances are there is a bad solder joint behind led panel. Chevy's are known to have a bad solder joint. Dont understand why that quality control lets so many pass by. But it is common. Jerry Hill- archer

So you are the guy that damages stuff at the wreckers.
There are much simpler ways of powering up a vehicle to read the mileage, such as connecting your battery where the battery ought to be connected..
BMW clusters require several connections to be anything close to "live". Powering one up out of the car is tedious and you'll NEVER figure it out without the correct wiring diagram in hand.
A very odd first post that is not even BMW related.
