It runs and starts smoother now (YES) but still fail smog...
Ideas ???

i have the same problem. What did yours turn out to be?
same 2 codes here. little uneven running at idle, better when warms up. no check engine lights yet, but 1161 & 1159 codes show up with scanner hooked up. drive cycle and computer are ready
Your OSV is bad!

I've changed several OSVs and on all of those I was getting smoke at start up and the cars had much more miles.
no smoke and only 65k on the car.
so if no smoke, then how do you check it?
let the car idle, pull the dipstick and check for vacuum, if idle changes or strong vacuum 99% it's the OSV
Age or millage has nothing to do with the part going bad

car runs real bad at cold start, and keeps stalling. as soon as I pulled the oil dip stick out a little it died. I'm changing the OSV & gasket today. we'll see
How to test OSV aka crankcase ventilation: http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/738865
if that happens with the dip stick then 100% OSV

no changes after new OSV ..... still runs like crap on a cold start. one foot on gas, one on the brake to keep it from stalling.....
I had the mechanic also change the valve cover gasket and plugs. I cleand the MAF & air filter. then with engine cover off, I sprayed carb cleaner all around the engine, sides, front and back and any hoses I could find and did not detect any surge on idle. what now?
very poor running at cold start. no CEL, computer ready with p1159 and p1161 pending.
any ideas? per cat O2s? then why wouldn't I get O2 specific codes?

i have the same 2 codes p1159 p1161 after changine OSV and Intake manifold gaskets .... you figure anything out a year later lol
Unless you break the cyclone separator by pulling the intake with the aluminum tube connected I can't see how it would go bad. It's just a open chamber that lets the oil fall back into the engine.
Vacuum leak. Hunted mine for a while. Turned out to be o-rings on the injectors. Change OSV as well
anyone know what the common casues for these codes p1159 and p1161 after doing a osv and intake manifold gaskets replacment
Mine turned out to be a vacuum hose that that came disconnected under the engine cover. Nozzle coming out the left side of the engine block towards the front was separated. More at http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...0#post21481660 . I have pics if anyone would like.
Also cleaned the MAF sensor. 10 minute job, just don't touch the elements - the resistor or platinum wire.
I am currently running the same two codes accompanied with a P0340.... I change my spark plugs and noticed oil and some of them but after changing the spark plugs my car is running a million times better I also changed out a coil pack but these three code still remain... I'm on working-class mans budget so I figured I would ask around or check in and see if I get any good feedback... I have a 99 740iL and the symptoms are that is the rough idle is gone. But I still feel like I'm lacking some power

I'm having the same issue. I'm going to replace the OSV. Looks like a pain in the butt. I hope i don't need to take off the intake.

I changed almost everything in my car related to this, helped a lot, but still check engine, The biggest primary cause was the fuel injector O-Rings. I sprayed brake cleaner on them and can see that it dissipate Into the seal and had major idle change. after replacing all the O-Rings I sprayed again and no idle change. After changing the O-Rings I reset my check engine light and it has not came back on and my gas mileage is way better. Thanks for posting, I did not even think of checking my Fuel injector O-Rings.
