I would like to put a magnetic drain plug in my transmission a 97 z3 Roadster with a 6 cylinder 2.8 anyone know what size and thread the drain plug is not had any luck so far.
Below is a magnetic plug, but I would suggest to just add a small neodymium magnet to your current plug. Just look up the dimensions of your current plug or a picture to get an idea of what shape and size will work, get a neodymium magnet off ebay. Just don't get a huge magnet, the trans pan has solenoids that it may interfere with, as long as it's small similar to the one at ECS it should be fine.

You could put a very small dab of RTV silicone to help hold it. Also the magnet is very strong and your sticking it to steel. It's not going anywhere.
I once put a cylindrical magnet on my engine oil drain plug, it was pretty long like almost an inch. I epoxied it to the plug, it lasted a long time but the epoxy didn't like being in the oil, a different epoxy may have worked better.

There is actually no need to put a magnet on the drain plug of the trans, there are magnets in the trans pan originally installed , for example ZF 1043 301 036 Magnet, in the 5HP18 2 of them.
I always clean them when I change the filter, these magnets are also good to see the condition of your trans . Here you can see them when we make a trans service on a ALPINA E36 B6 ZF 5HP19, Valve Body Repair http://e32b12.blogspot.com/2013/10/a...dy-repair.html
or do you talk about a mechanical transmission?

Not everyone wants to drop the pan when doing a service. So having a decent magnet would grab some material.
