Hey guys!
So I've got a 1997 e36 Touring. I have to change my windshield, because it's worn out and has a tiny crack.
Until recently I also had a 2002 e39, so I remember that the e39s had a remarkably comfortable Climate Comfort Windscreen, which significantly reduces sunlight's infrared radiation. Thus - less heat inside the car, more efficient climate control system and happier passengers.
Is this Climate Comfort Windscreen offered for e36 too? I live in a country with severe summer sunlight, I'd prefer to have as much infrared protection as possible.
p.s. I don't count on OEM solutions only, aftermarket would also do just fine. Any suggestions would do, aside from tinting the windshield ofc.
You mean ultra violet?
The Climate Comfort Windscreen is specifically designed to block infrared, according to a description I found on bmw.com.kh. Not sure if this means UV too. What do you think?
To be honest, I'm not sure if it's called UV, IRR or something else. But basically the end goal is to have reduced sunlight, coming from the windscreen.
I have an e39 too and that option never came on the e36 as OE equipment. And I'm not aware of any aftermarket options. Most would just coat the windshield with clear ceramic film if they are trying to cut back UV.
OP is correct that IR carries the radiant energy. UV is the radiation that causes sunburns. Most glass will stop UV, but you still feel the heat coming through. I've never used it, but I have read about the clear thermal film and people say it works.

There are clear films that can be applied to the windshields to add protection without darkening. Its helpful in a state like mine where they recently changed the window tint law. I am looking into them at the moment because I'd like to add some protection against the sun fading my interior. The rear decks fade from black to a purple color over time when exposed to sunlight.
I was going to say no because it dam hot after sitting in the sun.

If I read this correct, you can do an IR remote test with a camera & tv remote. the IR light will not pass the windshield.
Additionally, because the glass blocks out IR, any radio-controlled devices like automatic car starters, need a patch that is IR-permeable in order to function properly.
