    E30 propshaft question

Hi guys been getting strange whining from under car think narrowed it down to csb. I read somewhere that a bad propshaft would cause the bearing to fail is that true and how would i know?

Age and mileage also cause the prop shaft to go bad as well. Now typically on a BMW when the CSB goes bad, the driveshaft is right behind it.

You could change it as well as the flex disk to make sure, and don't forget to apply a little bit (1mm-2mm) of pre-load on the CSB.

Sweet Thanks for that. I take it when putting back together i the front end in first in the guibo and tighten then back end in tighten. Then do the preload? As well as mark it so its balanced thanks. Also can i get away with changing csb, guibo and flex joint or would i need the whole shaft too?

Correct, as you want to mark the driveshaft so it goes back exactly the same. You can try to replace the CSB and Guibo or Flex Disk, but the universal joints are not serviceable on the driveshaft. Doesn't really matter which end gets tightened first, but do leave the pre-load for last.

Also a diff low on fluid will whine too, so that is worth having a look at before you tackle the driveshaft, and if the fluid stinks like old fry oil, change it.
