Hey everyone, I recently purchased the 2016 535i xdrive with 48K miles on it. Car seems very hot under the hood after driving about 20 miles. I took to dealership and they put some coolant and said everything was good. I still feel the engine is way too hot after driving. It does t seem normal, even when i touch the hood from top itÂs extremely hot. Anyone faced this issue before? What did you do?
Uh yeah... that is totally normal for most any late model non-M BMW.
Oil runs at 250F nominal, coolant 195-235F nominal depending on what mode the DME is in. Its normal to feel your eyebrows singe when you pop the hood.
The DME goes into protection if oil temp exceeds 315F, or coolant 245F reducing engine output in attempts to coax an otherwise care free operator off the road.

They need to vent the hood I removed my center rear hood seal on my e 39 to let out the heat, while ducting in freash air to blow in to the abs pump and vented the cover above the coil packs. It can't hurt
This thread is amusing.

I would have to trust the engineers who designed it and leave ventilation to BMW. Didnt know about the limp mode, interesting
There producing way to much heat and not venting it seems like not a great idea and given BMW's track record of engine related problems I definetly don't trust the engineers
