That is probably bad vanos orings.

Also a note about German filters. I use Mann filters, Mann a subsidiary of Mann-Hummel which also makes the Purolator brand. Most Mann filters I see are made in Mexico.

That part isn’t available separately as far as I know. A junk yard may be your best bet.

lucky for me I work for the local bmw dealer. Im gonna look into to see how much it is. My plan is to get this bad boy bring a trailer worthy. So I dont want to cheap out of parts. I picked up the car for like $2k only. Already went through a few things and dropped like $1500 in parts so far. I plan on doing a stick shift swap on it too. So im excited for this. Conclusion: The problem was the top plug pictured here. The three guides/tails were missing on the plug and not seated properly. I'm assuming it was dancing around while in operation and causing a buzzing sound.

The oil canister is quiet now.

Similar parts for an E36 2.8L M52 parts are available on eBay (from Russia) occasionally...

When doing my last oil change a couple weeks ago, I found these tiny pieces of plastic at the bottom of the oil filter housing. Though I hear no rattle on startup, and no buzzing. Do you think these are the same legs as in your pic, or is it the sign of more serious problems (guides ?).

It’s too out of focus to get a good look at what it is.
