I'm touching up the fading and peeling black plastic bits in the engine compartment. The air box, the fuse box, etc. have come kind of clear-ish (now yellowing) coating that is peeling off. So who makes the best rattle can stuff to dress these things up? I presume that matte would be better than any shiny finish.

If you paint over that coating, the paint will just come off. You need to strip it then make sure the plastic is as clean as possible. You can use any high-temp engine paint but I tend to go for the very over-priced Rustoleum line. Comes in many colors and will do just fine for the job. You want to use a plastic primer first.

I researched this some time ago and found that the SEM Trim Black paint looked pretty good. It comes in satin, matte and gloss.

Edit: I didn't consider the heat in the engine bay. You'd have to check if SEM recommends the product for high heat.
Thanks for the tips. Clearly prep work will take some time. SEM advises testing on an inconspicuous spot. Good idea!
I'll 2nd the SEM Trim Black motion. They also make texture paint you can use, if appropriate, before applying the topcoat.
