Just got the fluid changed on the (new to me) 93 740i, coolant and oil. As we were bleeding the coolant in with the car running, i fixed the gear selector rod that wasnt in previously with some foam in the handle and a new pull rod. The selector locks in every gear now, except for some reason it doesnt go all the way up into park. The gears come up on the dash, but as we went to put it in reverse nothing happened. Step on the gas a bit, nothing. Tried drive, and after stepping on the gas a second or 2 it just clunks and pops up with trans program. After many attempts and turning off the car a bunch the car would start to crawl very very slowly in neutral, i put it all the way back into 2 and it did pull forward, although it felt like something was restricting it. The car sat for 2 years until march when i got it, and the brakes were a bit seized. Dont know if that has anything to do with it or not. Thanks
Sounds like your shift cable has seized like the brakes did. The result is that you don't get full range of movement of the manual valve inside the trans. Also, park may not hold so avoid parking on hills. Try some penetrating oil on the cable inner at the trans end and see if you can get it to move freely. Don't forget to check the cable adjustment afterwards.

also check the selector valve inside the valve body , they sometimes break, so you move the handle and the Bowden cable moves, but nothing happens inside the valve body https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...selector+valve
Shogun tricks and tips for the E32 series are HERE!
I say you should rebuild the valve body if there is no record of it being done before. What happens is the reverse check ball is too small from the factory and will actually pass through the hole and engage reverse in every gear, very common issue with the 5HP30.
