Hi guys,
First off...I would like to say "thanks" to all the helpful people on this awesome site...they've made restoring my car less frustrating.
My current issue involves the shift lever...and why it doesn't lock the lever in PARK with the key removed from the ignition switch. I am actually able to move the lever from park to all other gears without having the key inserted or my foot on the brake!! I removed the leather boot to take a closer look and noticed that if I insert the key and turn the battery on the plunger on the electronic shift lock does come out and locks the shift lever so you're not able to shift out of park.
I would imagine that the plunger is the only mechanism that prevents the transmission from being shifted out of park...Please advise if my thinking is wrong on that. Also let me know if you have any suggestions on what else I can check or if you have any experience with these kind of issues.
Thanks again for all the helpful advice
You have a 99 - so it has the steptronic shift / with the +/- on the gate?
Hi cohesion
Yes. It has the steptronic that allows me to place it on sport mode or manually shift
I believe there is something wrong with my case since I am able to shift the car out of park without having the key in the ignition or my foot on the brake!!!
The strange thing is that once I have the key in and turned to battery the shifter lock engages and prevents me from shifting out of park unless I put my foot on the brake
I would think there should be a way it prevents the shifter from being moved from park when the key is not in the ignition and my foot is not on the brake
Truly a strange issue and I can’t find anything disconnected or broken by the shifter assembly
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
Sounds like the interlock cable needs adjusting as described below:
