Ignition Coil and Spark Plugs upgrade

I was wondering what are the benefits (specifically for E31) upgrading the Ignition Coil other than being able to use a different spark plug than NGK BKR6EK.

Note: I am referring to 850ci and 850csi

Isn't that enough of a benefit?

If the car runs great there is no reason to change any thing, unless you just like to spend money

If you stay on top of the stock wires and ignition coils (these are wear items, though most people don't want to accept that), then the ignition system works great the way it is.

I know a lot of people say that, but respectfully I don't agree. I just changed my Cats and O2 sensors cause I refreshed my whole exhaust. A couple of us believe in pressing the "refresh button" on each section of the car when we work on them.
And Yes, spending money is an expensive hobby of mine.

I agree 100%. I am actually refreshing my whole top end including Coils, Spark Plugs, Wire, Cap/Rotor, Air Filter (throwing away K&Ns), cabin Filters, oil change. Is there anything wrong with my car? no but If I am going to sell it or keep driving it, I want a perfect maintanted car for the next owner or I.

Most (?) of those super coils have a lower primary resistance than the oem ones... can our DME's take that ?
Or, is there a super coil with the same primary resistance ?

Alex, you still have those K&N filters in there? Well, there's your trouble...just kidding. You'll have to fabricate your own ignition coil mounts if you're going aftermarket. I had the aftermarket coils in my car for a short period but eventually went back to the OEM style. The BOSCH ones run fine and provide plenty of juice to the plugs, and on top of that, keeps all the spark plug cables OEM style too...with the cables housed neatly inside the enclosure. No need to fabricate new ignition coil wires and one less potentially problematic thing to deal with.

Yes, I didn’t listen and it was the K&Ns which caused a check engine light on startup!!! Now I have two sets of them, and I sure hell going to put them in my S70 car. Cartoonz called to make sure its not going in my S70 car since the MAFs are NLA on them.

Phoenix Motorsports provides a Mallory coil with a bracket that will attach to factory coil mount. Of course I sandblasted and painted the new coils black. Mallory was fine with this procedure. My 1991 850i starts faster runs smoother and has no missing at the tail pipe at idle. I would do this again.

Those are just plain MSD Blaster coils. You can buy them just about anywhere for about $35-$40 each.
