I just sold my beloved 2004 X3 2.5 , with 190,524 miles. In about six months I'll be looking for another one. I thought the '04 was a great and would love to find another with around 80K. I'm seeing a lot of 2006's ...I know things changed in 2007 and have some recollection that the changes were not good. Love to hear your thoughts about which years are the best in the 2004-2010 spread, and why. Thanks!!
DTCB: Interesting...I have the first three. At the start I had the 05 and 04. In my quest to stay on top of maintenance...I began to read on various sites about the many problems that come about...however, there were a group of X3 owners that seem to be vexed with problems that others X3 owners were not used to. Some owners longed for a dip stick...others exclaimed in agony about the cost and replacement of the electric water pump and there were also instances of discuss with a common part... (I think the oil level sensor) that was $200! I can buy 20 of those for my 3 X3. at any rate, those X3 owners happened to be from the 07 year . Oh boy am I in trouble now...moving right along, the first one I got was the 05 glider rides like it's on rails, the 04, the previous owners were business owners...they kept it up totally! My wife drives it now. I keep telling her is the biggest of the three and the damn thing drives rides like a Cadillac. Very little do I have to do to it but change the oil...sorry fluids. the grey ghost is at 182k on the clock now... and gives me no trouble at all. Then after seeing the robustness of these two I the came across the 06 already at 199k. That would be a turn off for any one but I know the strength of the first two but yet to know this 06 was kicking still at 199k told me there was an indication that this too was a good car and it is...now I have put in a lot of work into her...let's call it rehab. but the more reading and research i do for her, I also am doing it for the other two...once I tackle one problem...I am now prepared in tackeling it for the future.
Rehab Red drives straight and strong she loves to eat up the road. everything functions on her at this age and mileage... 203 currently. shes standing the test of time.
the better of the three for me is the 04 built like a tank.

I specifically looked for my wife an 07+ with sport package. We found a black on black 07 with 110k. The N52 is a good engine but the electric water pump sucks to fix and a few other things are more labor intensive. I think the facelift looks better. Comes down to personal preference I think. Can't go wrong with the M54 engine though. If you can't work on them yourself then its probably a wash either way. Go with what you like that gives you the best value. At least they didn't come with the N63 engine..
