    New to M5s. Help.

I’ve never owned an M5 or any 5 series for that matter. I’ve always wanted to but never had the money for it. I’ve finally found one in my price range (<$10k) but it has 192,000 miles! The guy is asking $6,900 and I’m very eager to buy it. If I were to buy it, what issues should I look out for, would it be worth it, etc.

    Thanks,
    Deepy

That is a lot of mileage, every thing about the m5 is completely dirrerent that the regular 5 series so parts will be more. I would get a pre purchase inspection for sure. I had a customer with 280 on his and the engine had never been apart. Personally if I could afford an m5 and I can't I would search for a much lower mileage and the last year of production. Also take your time looking for a car, it may take a while to find the right one, but if you rush into it you may regret it.

My experience has been, If I don't have the money to buy a good example, I definitely don't have the money to rehabilitate a beat one. Probably not what you want to hear, but I have many times tried to save money like this. The amount of money and time to get to where you want to be is just not worth it.

Plan on spending money to get it to baseline.

$10k is usually a good start just for the parts.

The most expensive BMW is a cheap M5. (To one of your earlier posts lclausen, the most expensive BMW is a cheap e9) AMHIK

No M car is cheap. They all add up to 20k. At this mileage plan on doing vanos, rodbearings, and timing chain guides.

Basically listen to what everyone else has said. Assume that every dollar you save on purchase price is one you're going to spend on maintenance to get it up to a good baseline. The S62 is a great engine, mine has 210,300 miles on it and runs strong but you have to take care of it. Mileage isn't the only concern, care is a big one. Have timing chain guides, VANOS service, and rod bearings been done? Those are the big ticket items.
