on my 1995 740il there is a red light on the shifter indicating that the car is in park but when i turn the car off the light doesn’t turn off and im afraid it might drain my battery any help is appreciated

If the light never goes off - more than 15 min, ( check at 25 min ). Then it could be the body module not going to sleep, and that will kill your battery over time
Just an FYI...as mentioned, the light stays on for 16 minutes after the car is shut down. If there are no calls made on the P-bus (peripheral bus)...then the light will go out as the car goes into SLEEP mode.
If you lift a handle or unlock the door...then you will wake the car up and certain systems "prep" themselves for passengers...this little orange light on the gear shift is an indicator that the car is awake.
And yes, make sure that the car is going into SLEEP MODE...you can set your timer (on your phone) for 16 minutes...then come back and take a peek to see if the gear shift light has turned off.
