    2015 335xi issues

Brought my 2015 335xi stick in because I've been hearing a new muffled whine on start up. To me it sounded like an alternator for some reason.

I also thought I might be hearing things ( I'm a child of the 60s).

Anyway the dealer diagnosed a failing Alternator and weeping seals on the rear diff.

Both will be fixed no charge under CPO and I'm not crazy, that's the good news.

Of concern is that the car only has 40k miles.

( BTW - Keeler BMW, Latham NY has really stepped up)

BMW's are not Honda's. They require ongoing maintenance, even at lower mileages.

I have found that modern Hondas require maintenance just as much. It's just that they're a lot more forgiving when it is deferred.

On the topic of alternators.... alternator whine seems to be a common finding with these variable charging systems. I wonder if it's something actually broken, or simply a bit noisy.

Dealer said they tested the alternator after they also heard the "whine"

Don't know what the new Alt would cost out of pocket without CPO.

    I'm sure not inexpensive

Not that it helps any, but BMW doesn't make alternators, and what you heard might have just been the decoupler pulley on the front of the alternator.

The weeping differential could have been left alone, but......

If you're the second owner, you really have no idea if the first owner abused the vehicle, but you have a warranty, at least for now.
