Hi. I have a 1984 735i. I’m experiencing a problem with the brakes. On occasions the brake pedal will go down almost half way before “taking up”. This coincides with the brakes basically locking partially on. If I leave the car for a while turned off, then the issue resolves and the brakes will return to normal. The car is then fine to drive again for a while until the same thing happens again. Any ideas? I’m thinking that the brake master cylinder might be failing.

Check the brake bomb. Does the brake light on the dash ever flash?
with the car off, check the level of the power fluid in the gold reservoir. Then press the brake pedal 20 times and if the level does not change the brake bomb is toast.
You were already thinking the MC, I just thought you should eliminate the bomb from being the problem. It holds a cup or two of fluid under pressure for the brakes and with the car off and pressure released, the fluid level will rise. Measure power fluid with car off and brake pressed 20 times to 10mm below lip of the reservoir.
