My 1996 M3(S52, Single Vanos) keeps throwing the P0430 code for the cam position sensor. I replaced it a while ago, it threw the code again then I read up on here that you need to get a specific brand (I think Seimens or VDO?) so I got the better one. The code went away for almost a year, but its now coming back. I'm wondering what else it could be. The car has almost 198k on it, but it's well maintained and never tracked or anything. Did an oil analysis a little while back and it came out good.
VANOS? It's not making any noise. The power seems normal, except now when the CEL goes on its underpowered, I'm assuming it's going into limp mode (it's never done that before when it threw this code).
Anything in the cam chain or valvetrain I should check? I replaced the lifters about 10k miles ago.
Or maybe it needs a new Cam Position Sensor again? Looking at my records I replaced it just under a year ago, about 3,000 miles.
Moved from the no-answer zone.... Did you find the issue?

I think Bosch is the OE provider for that sensor, normally VDO/Siemens will work too.
I would think you can look at live data to see what the DME is commanding, and what is the actual value for the VANOS. What diagnostic program are you using?

You can also check the ohms on the sensor. Believe the cam sensor should read 1250 ohms between pins 1 and 2. Are you getting a P0430 or P0340 code? P0430 is not related to the CPS but to your cats and O2 sensors.
Check the wiring between the engine harness connector and the engine computer (DME). See if there’s any oil that wicked up into the DME.
