Hello all, I am the proud owner of a 2007 328xi 6mt e90! I know it’s old but I really love how it feels and presents. I live in New England so the awd will be nice and the 6 spd manual should bring some joy back into driving for me. I have done a lot of searches to familiarize myself with the car and community. Any tips or advice is welcome, I am having some trouble following some terms and acronyms in discussions and if there is a translator post somewhere that would be helpful. I will is post pictures when I can get some, car is currently at my dads shop because He has to get CT emissions done with his dealer plate before I can register it. It failed yesterday because of a check engine light due to the thermostat or related code. He may have a code reader but he won’t have anything very up to date. Is vag-com what I need? I searched some but was overwhelmed by the different types of scan tools. I think I will but a cheap laptop and cable and whatever software is fitting. I will continue to learn and search but if you have anything to share it will be appreciated. Thanks and glad to be part of your family!
Hello and welcome to the forum! I'm attaching a link to our site's DIY tech articles on the e90, which will be helpful if you're planning on working on the car yourself.
As far as the scan tool, we currently have a group buy going on a great BMW one for $149.95 ($70 off standard price). Attaching the link below as well. Please let us know if you have any questions or if we can assist with any future part needs.

Awesome! Thanks and yes I plan to be doing maintenance and repairs myself. I grew up in my parents 3 bay old school full service garage/fuel depot but only did some work on bmw’s for resale in the early 90’s. Look forward to learning and getting to know everyone and maybe I can offer something back!
Yup get a scan tool. The Pelican Parts deal isn't bad. I bought a Foxwell nt520 through Aliexpress for about $110 delivered from china where they make them. Looks like the PP one is still a Foxwell by another name. Mine just went back to China for warranty work or exchange. $23 for shipping back. If Pelican deals with warranty issues then it is worth it through them. Now that you own a Break My Wallet learn everything about your car. Do preventive maintenance.
Break My Wallet! That’s a good one and I never heard that before, bet I’ll mutter that a few times over hopefully a long time!
Yeah here is the funny part that will also date me. Back in 82 I got my first BMW. A 2002 Ti. Lots of problems with it. Used of course. Turned me off of "The Ultimate Driving Machine". Fast forward 25 yrs and some how all I have are BMW machines. It's the wife's fault. Started with her 1994 325ic with only 30k on it for $7k. I let other people eat the depreciation because as we know all cars are money pits. Keep the pit shallow. Next was the 2004 Range Rover (aka fancy X5). Now the wife has a 2012 328ic. Still have the other 2. Always something to fix or maintain with 3. But I'm getting used to them and their quirks. But not a day goes I don't long for the simplicity, ease of repair and dependability of my 94 Wrangler. A bus ate it.
I hear that! Glad you survived bus vs wrangler, they are fun but a great benefit of our cars is the modern safety equipment is fantastic!
