Just finished changing the oil in my lowly I-6 at 74,088 miles. As I was about to remove the oil filter cap I was thinking about all the times I've read about how you should try to brace the oil filter housing from the torque of removing the cap, in order to prevent leaks at the OFHG. I grabbed a clamp but there doesn't appear to be any way to secure the housing while removing the cap. Anyone have any input on this?

Pretty sure this just pertains to the 540, it is mounted to the bracket with 2 rubber bushings that can break easily if you over torque the cap. Hand tight is fine.

Thanks guys.

Well.....the best way to remove or install the OFH Cap is with a socket that can be turned with a "T" handle, esp. on the I6's. With the OF Housing attached to the side of the block, any pulling or pushing with a combo or adjustable wrench, or with a breaker bar or even a torque wrench, has the effect of 'peeling' the OFH mounting surface away from the block, which causes unnecessary failure of the gasket. Using a socket with "T" handle will reduce this stress on the gasket. And a light torque that gets the cap's o-ring below the OFH rim is all that's needed to seal it. There's really no need to use all of those Powdered Toast Man muscles on the OFH cap - but they would have come in handy when torquing the wheel bearing bolts!
