Question regarding oil pump drive gear cap seal

    Good evening,

Today i noticed a small leak coming from the oil pump drive gear cap, it is where the distributor position was located in early M20s.

Item number 24 on the diagram:

After searching, there is a bearing in there, should i order a new bearing and replace it? when the cap pulls off, does the bearing get stuck in the cap? i have seen pictures of both the cap with and without the bearing, or just replace the seal and call it a day?

    Thank you.

Spent a full day at the DIY workshop yesterday.

The whole exhaust system was removed front to back, to replace all the rusted/broken bolts and get it sealed.

Exhaust headers....damn 4 studs were snapped, took me a while to remove just one, they are all rusted shut. Ended up taking 1 manifold to a workshop, they heated and struggled removing the 3 studs on one manifold. The other, slowly drilling them out.

Got a new radiator and cooling hoses, everything is now fresh and new in there. Then came removing that cap to replace the leaking seal.

It is stuck, i tried grinding a screw driver underneath, vice grips....slowly heating it nothing. That cap is seriously stuck in there, it was a day of removing stuck/rusted parts honestly, my back is soar, so are my hands and feet.

Any tips to get that cap off? i even doubted myself, thinking there is another way to remove it, just 1 13mm bolt for the bracket and it should come off?

To anyone having trouble getting the cap off, I ran into the same issue while addressing the timing belt, water pump, and other miscellaneous front seal leaks. I did this with my oil pump shaft still in place. Otherwise I believe its possible for the gear to fall into the oil pan. The way I removed it was simple, remove the airbox, grab the cap with some pliers, and slowly pull on it while spinning and wiggling ensuring that it therefore comes out straight. Using a flathead on an edge in an attempt to pry the cap up will only cause it to lock in place. If the cap does not spin freely, tap it down till it does, then try removing it using my method.

P.s My cap didnt come out that clean, I took the pictures after I degreased it
