I'm selling a 1998 BMW Z3 M Roadster. This car has been great to me. At ~26mpg and only ~$50 per oil change, I drove this 120+ miles per day all the time for work as my gas saver. It is light, fun, cheap to run, and gets a lot of good attention. I live near downtown and have too many toys (3 cars, 1 truck, 3 motorcycles) and not enough space and time for them all. I am letting another enthusiast enjoy this special car. I just acquired a Lexus ISF so this needs to go.
Initially the Z3 was designed for a 1.9 liter inline-4 motor making only 138 bhp. The M version however got the reliable E36 M3's S52 3.2 liter inline-6 motor, producing 240 bhp at 6,000rpm and 236 ft lbs of torque at just 3,800rpm. The S2000 only makes 153 ft lbs of torque at 7,500rpm for comparison. This means that this little Z3M will grunt at any rpm range, you'll be able to accelerate quickly without downshifting all the time.
This car when released was the quickest accelerating BMW of its time, sprinting to 1/4 mile in the mid 13's. Wider track and wide tires provides great handling and feedback. This was the first car to receive the signature BMW's M quad exhaust. The S52 motors will do well over 250,000 miles with minimal work, as seen on many E36 M3's on the used market today.
Some key maintenance and were done to the car recently.
-Randy Forbes subframe reinforcement (a must do to reinforce the rear of the car)
-E36 M3 dual eared differential mount (stiffens the driveline, suspension, and responsiveness)-Fluid changes (oil, dif, coolant)
-Newer brakes (rotors and pads)
-New cooling system (radiator, hoses, water pump upgrade)
-Newer tires (Ventus V12)
-Leather seats restoration
-Color matched OEM hardtop ($2,500 in the USED market today)
-Euro taillights (clear and red. US OEM available)
-Seatbelt guides fixed
Some key deficiencies.
-Upper mast of the antenna is missing. I listen to Pandora/radio just fine so I have not fixed this. I put a temporary plug on the mast location to prevent moisture from entering
-Hood has some minor fading from the sun. I'm unsure if a cut and polish will bring it back to life.
-The Randy Forbes kit causes differential whine to be heard. I don't mind the mechanical noise, but many others have put sound deadening over the rear axle to ease the whining.
-The soft top and rear windows works great, but is original.
-Driver side mirror control doesn't work. It has never bothered me, but I'm assuming the motor is bad. Once adjusted, I just left it alone. I adjust the passenger side for parallel parking as needed without an issue.
This car has 142,800 miles and will go up slowly as I take it out every once in a while. Clean title in my name and service records available. VIN:WBSCK9339WLC85320
