new to my 1999 328I , i noticed a sound at idle ..kinda like a power steering pump wine ....cant notice when driving. it might be normal just dont know
A failing fuel pump can make a whine, but you can usually isolate that sound as coming from the rear (under the back seat, in fact).
Try to isolate the location. Open the hood and use a mechanics stethoscope (or any bit of hose).
If it is a whistle look at the brake booster.
For a whine it could be any of the items on the belts in front. Pulleys, water pump, compressor, steering pump.
If you can isolate at the belt area, remove the serpentine belt and idle for a moment to see if the whine goes away.
