Typically oil is a personal preference. But try to get an LL01 oil like mobil 1 ow-40, I think there's a couple from liqui Moly

Oil filter there's mann and mahle I believe are recommend

As far as tutorial, open hood remove oil cap.
Underneath car drain from drain plug with a 17mm socket or wrench. Replace oil filter, use 36mm socket to remove filter cap, replace o ring and paper filter, lubricate o ring. Fill oil about 7 quarts

And lastly, DO NOT OVERTORQUE the drain plug!! It's about 18.4 ft lbs. if you have a torque wrench. It's aluminum and you can easily strip the pan.

Hand tighten, then a 1/8" turn with a socket is all that is really needed.

Quantity is going to be 7qts, Mann, Mahler or Hengst filter. The filter comes with a new O-ring for the filter cap, it goes in the groove above the threads, no higher. Torque for the cap is 25nm, you'll need a 36mm socket. 0w-40 or 5w-40 oils will work, LL01 is spec but many people use Rotella t6 5w-40 with no ill effects.

Gave away my BMWs, driving a VW and an Audi now.

Pay attention when you remove the oil filter cap, to where the o-ring sits. I laid six quarts of Mobil 1 on local roads once, after placing the o-ring incorrectly. At $8 a quart, that little adventure cost $48, plus another $48 to replace what was spilled. And don't ask about the cleanup.

And replace the crush washer (comes with the filter) before replacing the drain plug.

Dispose of oil properly - I put it back into the gallon bottles and bring to a service station or oil changer.

M1 is not actually LL01 anymore but from a practical perspective it should still work fine (just don't leave it in for 15000 miles). I just waited for a local parts store to have an oil sale (5 quarts plus free filter) and would buy 2 jugs of Castrol Edge and filters for my wife's car.

Pretty much anywhere that sells sockets. There's probably 1000 oil change videos on youtube for the E46. Watch few to get a good handle on the process.

Buy a 6-point socket for both the 17mm drain plug (there are many bolts on the E46 that use a 17mm socket!) and the 36mm oil filter. The minimum quality is craftsman. Also, replace the 2 small o-rings at the bottom of the oil filter carrier. The part # for both is 11427549573.These prevent the oil from flowing from the filter housing back into the crankcase. Why is this good? Keeping oil in the filter housing shortens the amount of time it takes the oil to reach the rotating engine parts such as the crankshaft and camshafts.

It was LL01 before BMW changed the spec so I wouldn't worry too much about it - especially in an old E46. I probably drove 70-80k miles on M1 in my 330ci before trading it for my M2. M1 5w30 is definitely not recommended - lots and lots of posts about it being a "light" 30 weight and too thin for an M52/54 (and most other BMW engines I'm sure)

i have successfully been using oil evacuator down the dipstick tube. have never changed the oring on the oil filter cap, no leaks.
10K intervals, filter on second change only 303,000kms now. oil synthetic or blend castrol, M1, etc.
