Strut tower mount crack

Hi guys...

I have a 2004 330ci with 99k miles. I have it getting an alignment right now at the dealership I have been going to for 15 years.

They just called to say I have a 1/2 crack on my strut tower mount on the front driver side. Now I know that there is some history with these cracking, and with the age of the vehicle coupled with the tremendous amount of large potholes we have in Dallas, this is feasible.

That said, the first thing the guy told me (after he tried to instill the fear of God into me) was I should just trade it in or sell it now to get at least 5k for it. I said, really? Why would I do that? It's not like it's not drive-able and I have been burning through tires on this car since Day 1 anyway. He started stammering and said oh well we have to take the whole engine out to weld it and the welding is done by the body shop. It could cost me about 10k.

I'm at a loss here because that doesn't make sense to me.

Any thoughts on this, guys?
