Yo guys I'm trying to build my 96 1.9 liter z3 and was just looking for help pushing me in the right direction if I should even attempt this with this car and so on. First question I've been reading and I went out and got a 3.91 diff to weld for it but it's from an e36 it should bolt right on correct??it's a 5 speed to btw

My opinion is to not start with a 4-cyl car, unless you have some specific reason for doing so. The best upgrade/$ would be to sell it and buy a 2.8 6 cyl. Then, do a lot of reading and asking, as you have done. If you are patient, you will save a lot of time and money and headaches.
E36 diffs dont work on Z3's...

I suppose the question would be what exactly do you want to build for.
If you are looking to autocross or track the car, you will have to check the rules to see what modifications are allowed, and what kind of cars you will be competing against. Likely the Z3 will be outclassed in any class you put it in, and any modifications beyond bolt-on exhaust systems and adjustable shocks and struts would make you even worse off.
If you're just looking to have a bit of fun, look around and see what kind of turbo work others have done on the M44, and the cost that goes into it. Unless you got the car especially cheap, you might find it's a better investment to start off with a six cylinder model.
In the end, it's your money and your time. Research the options, weigh the pros and cons of each.
