    Replacing lost key

So, I've somehow managed to misplace the one and only key remaining for my '84 633CSi. (Apologies if there's already a thread on this subject; I searched the forum and didn't see anything.) I've been told (by a friend with a vintage Benz, not a Bimmer, however) that a local dealer can replace at least some keys as long as they have the VIN and proof of ownership, but a) is this true even for 35-year-old models and b) are there any specialty locksmiths anywhere that specialize in this particular niche? (I'm asking mainly because local locksmiths and hardware stores in my area have mostly been forced out of business by Home Depot and Lowe's.) Any tips would be much appreciated!

I'd get a key from a dealer - they should still be able to create one from the VIN

I got replacements for my89 from the dealer, I did need the VIN and registration. Base key only you haveto buy the rest of the fob separately. If I remember right it was not cheap 20to 30 bucks and they had to get them from New Jersey but worth it in the end.

Pull the lock from your glove compartment. IIRC it will have the key code on it and a locksmith should be able to cut a key from that. IIRC. It is not a major thing to pull that lock

I ordered a key from a dealer too. They only needed the VIN to cut the key and also asked for proof of ownership. I emailed them a picture of my owner's card.

Same deal as others have reported, keys are ordered via your friendly local BMW Dealer Parts Department, then cut in New Jersey. Turnaround was very quick. It ended up being something like $80 for the plain key. I know that sounds expensive, but it had to be expedited. They even drop-shipped it to my Aunt's house!

These keys are simple enough that a local locksmith could easily do it, but all the quotes I got were ridiculous. The most reasonable 'estimate' was $350.
