Hello. I am happy to find and join this forum - and anticipating that it will be of great help.
Here is my BMW story.
I've had a 318ic (M30) since 2000 and drove it until 3rd gear began popping out of gear at an increased rate. This was a problem when I acquired the car, but it only happened occasionally.
It got so bad that eventually, I just went from 2nd to 4th, totally bypassing 3rd.
After a while, I thought I should drain and replace the transmission oil - which I did. But it wasn't long after that, that a bad thing happened: not only was 3rd gear completely gone, but now there was no 4th gear! I had used a BMW recommended oil, Red Line too.
So... I haven't driving it much these days. This condition makes city driving impossible. I try to take the car out on the interstate every once in a while just to keep the car from totally falling apart (and yes, shifting for 2nd to 5th). I have not had the resources to get the transmission professionally repaired, but that may now be changing soon. I've just had other financial priorities in the interim.
In the past, have rebuilt a Yamaha RD 400 motorcycle engine and a Toyota Tercel engine, but the latter was difficult, a huge learning curve, time consuming and seemed endless. I am pretty sure I will not attempt overhauling my M30 transmission.
But there will be other future repairs needed, namely a new soft top, shocks and I think there is a leak somewhere in the cooling system (which was another known issue when I first got the car).
I hope to learn a lot here.
Thanks.

there is a really good (although expensive) bmw specific shop in Austin. let me think for a bit and I will come up with the name.
No e30s again.
Terry Sayther automotive? With the outdoor bays? My racing friends brought back pictures of that place, they got help from them when they were racing at COTA. All kinds of cool cars sitting around there, including an M1 at the time!
