Ok so my '84 318i has had a slight gearbox oil leak for some time now; at first thought it was oil but now realize is gearbox fluid.
It's now at a very low level looking at the clear overflow container in engine bay. And sure enough yesterday I noticed the clutch pedal has much less pressure and goes to floor too easily. So I need to add gearbox oil asap (i'd like to attemp at home). So 2 questions:
1) what modern day gearbox oil should I use (and can I purchase from Autozone, etc...)?
2) any instructions, tips, etc... for doing this oil add?
Many thanks in advance.
Dave
that clear container is for the brakes and the clutch, its not your transmission oil. to check your transmission, if tis a stick, you have to lay under the car and pull a plug and feel in with your finger tip, basically. the auto trans has a stick you pull out and check, like the engine oil.
but, your container is brake fluid that works your clutch and your brakes. you can get dot 4 and put it in there but since your clutch feels easier, you probably will have some air in it that you have to either work out with normal use, or bleed out with a pressure bleeder or a second person. either way will work fine.
No e30s again.
