Here's the mystery. If I haven't driven my X5 for a couple of hours it can take three or four miles until the AC starts working. To get it to work I've started accelerating quickly three or four times under the presumption that the acceleration would "jolt" the AC into working. I've found that when I do accelerate hard two or three times that it starts to work so who knows. I thought it might be the belt or belt tensioner so I swapped them out but the problem persisted. When the AC starts working it blows cold and consistently and if I turn off the car and leave it for an hour the AC works straight away. I had the AC refrigerent checked and it's normal. Has anyone seen this problem?
I've seen it many times. Not sure why it happens, but the only way I've fixed them here in the shop is with a new A/C compressor.

Thanks - I appreciate the feedback.
So you had it fully service and had the pressures check?
I had the same problem on my 06 4.4i. serviced at the dealer, they said all was working well and topped up the refrigerant. within a few weeks it was back to the same...in the middle of summer.
it's been two years and still haven't had time to get it fixed again. I'm thinking a new compressor is what it needs
