Compressor seems to be working ok, r12 a little bit low but no love from the vents. It was mediocre a year ago, now no cold, just warm air. Mechanic friend thinks maybe exp valve, but looks like major dash disassembly to check. Any insight? Want to fix it before I sell

Fill refrigerant to the specified level? When there is too little fluid the AC won't work properly, but, there is too little in there so you might want to do leak testing first with a contrast fluid. This will tell you where a leak can be found. You'll need to see a shop for this.
Mechanic put guages on it, added dye and an old stock 12oz can of r12. Still warm. That's why he thinks it might be the expansion valve. I'd just replace it if I could. Looks like nearly the entire dash would have to come out to get to it. Im grasping for straws looking for anything else to try first.

Did you check the cabin air temp sensor in the dash kick panel? They rarely fail but the vac hose boot tends to fall off, sometimes it's disconnected from the intake manifold. I've also forgotten to plug it back in on occasion.

Steve,
You can still get a recharge with R12,
I went to a local independent Bimmer dealer,
They would only do it if they provided the R12, and they charged me $95.00 for each can,
My m6 required two 8oz cans, of r12.
The Labor was $150. + the 2 cans.
I took my 2 cans of R12 with me that I had purchased on ebay, but they would not use mine.
Best,
Jay

If you have dual air inthe 87 I found with my 89 the only way to get the AC working right was they hadto completely evacuate the system and then a complete refill, now its workinggreat. For some reason with the dual units you can't "just add"refrigerant, it had to be drained and refilled. At least that’s the way it was withmine.
