MY 2005 X5 3.0 SES light came on and I went to the auto parts to have them to read the code. It said p442. I changed the gas cap with a BMW and cleared the code. When I started up the car check gas cap message came up. After about three days of driving, my SES light came back on. I put a new gas cap and purge valve on it So o assume that is not the problem. Any ideas on what I should look at new. I am leaning toward changing out my entire evap system but if it is a simple fix I can save that time and money.
Now you need to smoke test the evap system the dmtl pump I believe lives in the right r wheel wheel area so before the test remove the wheel well liner to see if anything leaks there check the faults again to see if it's the exact same one
This is why proper diagnosis is important before you just throw parts at it. A simple smoke test would probably pinpoint the exact failure point versus you just throwing away money.
