So my car died on me while I was driving, took it to the shop and my starter and alternator dried out. Had both changed car started up just fine. After about 30-40 miles driving. This knock noise started coming on and I got the famous "drivetrain malfunction" warning..
Shut the car off and started it and right away the warning message comes on and the knocking starts right away.
Please help on what it can be !
What year is the car and how many miles? F10 550 is fairly specific, but covers a wide production range.

Then take it to an independent shop and pay them to replace your engine. If you take it to a dealer, and contact BMW, you may get luck and qualify for a goodwill warranty repair.

That vehicle is likely covered by the N63 Class Action. Take it to the dealer and tell them the exhaust was smoking more than what you think is normal. Unless the knocking noise is unmistakable, don't even mention it. And if it is, then say that the knocking noise just started recently, but the smoking has been going on for some time.
How long have you had the car? Do you know the maintenance history?
2013 may have a N63T. I'm not exactly sure when the switch was. But either way, if it spun a rod bearing, and is knocking, I've never seen one get declined for goodwill.

was this car in a flood or something? I'm curious how a starter and alternator both go at the same time? Sounds electrical to me. Also "drivetrain malfunction" could mean a lot of things, but if coil packs also got damaged and were shut off, that could cause the engine to run rough and produce a "knocking sound". just a thought. keep us posted please.
