Hello everyone. E39 M62 non vanos owner here. My baby has 400k on her and I am ready for something different. Had an '07 E53 3.0 and loved everything about it except it was way underpowered. So I started researching engines, etc. and was wondering about the S65 [which replaced S54] What year did that happen, and what's the most recent year that engine was used in an X5? Also, does anybody have experience with that engine good, bad or indifferent?
TIA!

You're a little misinformed. 2006 was the last year of the E53. If you had a 2007, it was an E70. The S54 was used in the E46 M3 only, and the last year of the Z3 M roadster. It was never in an X5. The S65 was the v8 used in the E90/92/93 M3. It also, was never used in an X5.
Back on topic. The E70 3.0 with the N52 was severely underpowered. The N62 and N62TU v8 used in late model E53's, and earlier E70's were reliable (when compared to the later N63), but still had it's share of oil leaks and oil consumption that isn't cheap to repair. The N55 turbo used in the E70 facelift model (3.5i) is the one I would get if I was in the market. I would avoid the N63 X5 (5.0i) like the plague.
Ideally, get the latest model, with the least mileage, in the best shape you can find. It all depends on your budget and what you're looking for. Step up to an F15 if you can (2014 and later).

Thanks for this! I knew it was either an '06 or '07, thanks for the insight. Well you answered a few questions I had as I continue my research. I was wondering about the 5.0i... What are your thoughts on the M then?['09 to '13] Worth the extra $$? Reliability?
Thanks again. Much appreciated!

The S63 is basically a tuned N63. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

Good morning...i'm considering purchasing a used (CPO) 2018 X5 M, and ran across several comments on the F15 and F85. I am concerned because of all the problems i had with my 2012 X5 50i motor (N63). Is the S63 as bad as the N63, regarding oil consumption and the rest of the well documented issues? (i have previously owned a 2005 M3 convertible, so i am well aware of the higher maintenance costs with the M series)
