I can't find much information on them beyond the info in TIS. They thread into the top of the main bearing cap (with the engine upright).

I assume their purpose is to absorb any irregularities in the block and to keep the block square, like a corner balancing alignment. It keeps the torqued outer bolts from stretching the block. Here's what BMW has to say:

I believe I understand things a bit better now. Assuming a stock crankshaft, the stock bearing "yellow" size goes into the crankcase side of the main bearings. The other side, the cap side, requires precise measurement to select a "color" code. The size of the journal dictates what "color" bearing to order. The crank is marked with paint from the factory, but after hundreds of thousands of miles there's no way the paint is still intact. I'll have to get the crank mic'd and order the appropriate bearings.

Sounds like you got this figured out! A proper measurement with the correct tools will ensure success. Don't trust platigage. Its only good for a bump check IMO.

Are you planning on doing anything with the pistons? Getting new rings. or cleaning the ring grooves?

Just cleaning. With the nigh on zero oil consumption, there’s no reason to mess with them.

Great job so far Nate! I'm really enjoying watching the progress and it's nice to see someone else tackling something similar.

As for the water pumps, they used to be around $250 but went on back order and jumped up in price about a month ago

Supposedly, Laso and Saleri are the same.
    Saleri is OE.
    I would call ECS.

Alright, so I finished up the long spreadsheet for parts, part numbers, retailers, brands, and prices.

Current numbers come in at 402 individual parts, 146 part numbers, and a grand total of $4915 for everything I can think of, excepting machine shop work and the cap-side main bearings because I still need to have the crank mic'd.

Wow. I am replacing just about every single piece of rubber or plastic I can find, but jeez. There are some parts that are just expensive, like the dual mass flywheel and the timing chain tensioners.

Wow is right, M5 parts cost, even M5 parts that are exactly the same as 540 parts cost more. They change the p/n so they can jack up the price.

No. A few years ago I bought a complete M5 rear subframe with everything attached. I had to buy it that way to get the LSD and driveshaft. As I was parting out the parts I didn't need I was looking at the ones that were the same as my 540.....different p/n and higher price. I still have both rear wheel carriers....hint hint.

The part I remember the most was the rear subframe, it was exactly the same, just had an M5 sticker on it with a different p/n.

I'm practicing measuring on my old crankshaft with micrometers from everyone's favorite cheap Chinese tool store. They're accurate to .0001, which is good-ish for my purposes, but they are unfortunately in inches. Anyways.

The crank main bearing journals have two different specs listed in NewTIS:
    "bearing point 1"
    "bearing point 2-7"

I made a spreadsheet to convert the numbers to something readable from my calipers.

Now besides the fact that the S62 only has 5 journals (I assume that "Bearing point 6 and 7" are for I6s, and the TIS documentation was not updated to reflect a V8), it is odd that the #1 journal specs are .02 smaller than the rest of the journals. My measurements don't bear that out. The first journal is maybe 0.0004 smaller. They're pretty consistent across the crank:

    Screen Shot 2019-04-27 at 7.05.11 PM.png

But even with the published numbers, the "radial crankshaft bearing play" doesn't change. Allowable oil clearance is 0.025-0.050.

This seems odd to me. Can someone explain why it's like this? Two different specs for a journal that's not very different from the others? In any case, if I were to be installing this crank again, I'd just use yellow bearings all the way across, and the front oil clearance might be a smidgen tight, correct?
