It's been done before. The two main "gotchas":

You'll either need to convert to a cable operated throttle body, or use the stock ECU for the drive by wire.

The VANOS solenoids need 12 volt power, while the outputs from the MS are ground switched. An external high side driver module like the HSD4 is the easy option here. I've also seen things taken apart to pull the diodes out of the wiring to allow for ground switching, but that's a lot more work.

OK Cable operated throttle body is no problem, I wonder if a M50 Intake will bolt to a M54 head? VANOS can be done with HSD4 i can do that. Will the stock ECU be needed for anything else or is it removed from the car with the megasquirt-3 ?. Thanks for the help guys.

M50 conversion is done on the M54 quite a lot. I haven't researched too much about it but I do know that this exists https://www.seemslegitgarage.com/pro...ld-adapter-kit

You can remove 2 studs on the m54 head and put the m50 manifold on. I recommend porting the head to match

You will need 2 cam inputs on the MS3. I haven't personally done it but I would assume plenty of people have.

Tuning the vanos will take some time. Compensating for oil viscosity changes etc..

Alot of people run AEM pnp on the s54's. The vanos is similar, wouldnt hurt to poke through the aem base tune and see if any of it would be a good starting point for your M54.

I'd suggest just trying to copy over what's been done to the MS41 tune wise. MS43 has come quite a long way although not everything is fully defined yet. MS4x.net
