Purchased a key fob on eBay, thinking I'd be able to program the key myself since I've done it in the past on my other vehicles, but nothing has worked so far. Is it possible to program a key, purchased from eBay, without going to the dealer?
My car is a 2011 X3 xDrive35i

Yes, it is possible but requires a purpose built programmer. You need to find someone that has that capability as the hardware is generally more expensive than a dealer key. Here's a video showing it's possible with CGDI (~$600) for a standard key. Comfort access is also possible.
