    2004 iDrive Screen Replacement

Just yesterday my iDrive screen started to flicker (photo attached) so it's time for replacement. I've seen YouTube videos and doesn't seem complicated.

My question is, I have seen ads for Android replacement of the screen. What is the benefit gained of going with Android vs OEM? I'm not really sure I intend to keep the car much longer, I don't plan on making any other modifications to the car.2004 BMW 745Li iDrive Screen.jpg

Used OEM iDrive screens on eBay around $150.00 vs Android screens $500.00- $800.00 - WOW

You should look up bavtek online and see if they sell a replacement, it is just a screen

Changing the screen itself is easy task. Go for facelift MMI and you get better graphics and option to get aux input in future (needs 2007-2008 ASK and facelift fm tuner along with the screen).

I changed the screen to facelift one few months back. Of course it does need coding after replacing it.

I got the original MMI (screen) from my car I could sell it cheap, but I think the shipping cost would be kinda high to Chicago.

You should be able to just update the pre facelift MMI (screen) to the facelift interface with winkfp. All the MMIs use basically the same hardware throughout all years.

I have never done it myself but have spoken to a guy who has.
use winkfp to flash the new firmware to the module. You need to go to advanced options and specifiy the newer version of the software with the older load file.
I have also spent some time reverse engineering the MMI so no real difference between the hardware.

Guess, that could work also. Gotta try to update my old screen and see what happens.

As for the original question if you have aux in for sound the android unit can be used as a bluetooth interface and some other features depending on what you already have and all the functions that you would find in any Android device. And you shouldn't loose any of the original idrive functions as it should be still accessible in some way (I don't have the Android unit so this is just what I've heard).

But depending on if it's the lcd screen or the actual MMI that is causing the flickering you may still need a new MMI unit. Because if I remember correctly the Android unit just replaces the lcd screen and is connected to the MMI computer so that is still needed for all of the original idrive functions and probably power to the Android unit.

The size of the LCD display is 8.8 inches (diagonal). A 6.5-inch
display is planned as a future option.
The casing is designed to be able to accommodate all screen
    sizes offered.
The complete Control Display assembly is fixed to the
    dashboard by three screws.
The LCD display plus the screen cowl and glass cover form a
    detachable unit.
    Service information:
This means that if the glass cover becomes scratched, for
example, the LCD display and screen cowl can be replaced
    separately.
The LCD display plus screen cowl clips onto the metal casing.
A special tool is required to separate the two components.
Internally, the LCD display is connected to the electronic module
    by a ribbon cable.

I would guess that it's the FPGA (visible in the lower left corner) that has thrown in the towel as that's what outputs the picture to the lcd.
Or it could be the the lcd assembly (hard to tell).
